PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter that I’ll write in 2012. I’ve barely gotten used to typing the 12 and soon it will be 13 - a sure sign that I’m getting older.

It’s been a great year for CMBA. We’ve had some really terrific MCLE speakers. And we’ve got a great lineup so far for 2012. I mean, 2013 (see what I mean). In January, our own Jim Kamanski will enlighten us on ethical issues. (Yes, I know we had ethics in November, but my compliance period is coming up and I want to make sure I have enough ethics credits). And in Febru- ary, Patrick Kelley, President of the State Bar, will be our special guest. After that, we will be discussing employment issues for small businesses.

If you weren’t at The Proud Bird on December 15th, you missed a good party. The food was fantastic and the entertain- ment superb. And Mike Fate, as our Master of Ceremonies, did a great job. I didn’t win any of the prizes, but c’est la vie. Plus I was sworn in for my 4th term as President!

Happy Festivus everyone!

-Leslie M. Baker President

WEIRD LAWS IN CALIFORNIA

Here’s a little knowledge combined with a touch of humor, as we review some of California’s more unusual ordinances:

Arcadia
Peacocks have the right of way to cross any street, including driveways.

Baldwin Park
Nobody is allowed to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool.

Belvedere

City Council order reads: “No dog shall be in a public place without its master on a leash.

Blythe
You are not permitted to wear cowboy boots unless you already own at least two cows.

Burlingame
It is illegal to spit, except on baseball diamonds.

Carmel
A man can’t go outside while wearing a jacket and pants that do not match.

Ice cream may not be eaten while standing on the sidewalk. (Repealed when Clint Eastwood was mayor)

Women may not wear high heels while within the city limits.

Chico
One must obtain a permit from the city to throw hay in a cesspool.

Bowling on the sidewalk is illegal.

2

It is illegal to plant a garden in any public street.
Persons detonating a nuclear device within the city limits are subject to a $500 fine.

Dana Point
One may not use one’s own restroom if the window is open.

Downey
It is illegal to wash your car in the street.

El Monte
Sandboxes may not be used as ashtrays.

Fresno
No one may annoy a lizard in a city park.

Skipping rocks in a city park is not allowed.
It is against the law to hold a private Bingo game. Permanent markers may not be sold in the city limits.

Remember, as members of the State Bar of California, you are officers of the Court and should obey all laws and ordinances, so close your restroom windows, wear a jacket and pants that match, stop for all peacocks, keep your bicycle out of the swimming pool, spit only on baseball diamonds, and, by all means, do not annoy lizards when you are in a park by skipping rocks, or otherwise.
